The purpose of my proposal was to show my teachers and peers what purpose my senior project serves, and how I will accomplish it. This project also aided me in creating a timeline and organizing my project. My proposal represents communication skills, as I crafted my essay in a way that is easy to read, is informational, and clear. The hardest part of this proposal was revising it after changing my project. I realized that I didn't want to create a children's book, but rather a short book for all ages. If I could start over, I would have thought through my project more before writing my proposal. I can use this in the future when writing project summaries and proposals.
Project Proposal
“How can I create an educational book about Hawaii’s most important plants?”
Reading was a staple for me when I was a younger kid. My mom got me started early, and always suggested new and interesting books for me to explore. For my senior project, I will be creating a book appropriate and educational for all ages! It will be fun, interesting and informational, and it will be unlike anything I’ve done before.
Through this book, I will make an impact on younger students, my peers, and KCS teachers, and I will show personal growth through problem solving and making something I’m proud of.
I will compile both native and non-native plants of Hawaii, their common, Hawaiian, and scientific names, and an illustration of them. This will serve, in part, as an identification book, as all the plants listed can be found throughout the island of Maui, and are relevant to Hawaiian culture.
I have always had a passion for art through writing and drawing, however I never thought I could accomplish creating a book. I feel that a mostly illustrative book is a wonderful place to begin, and it will push my creativity and love for art even further. I will save a copy of my book for myself at the end of my project. This will give me something tangible to look back on when I begin future projects!
I will accomplish my goal of making this book by drawing out my plants, finishing my writing, creating a final draft, editing online, and publishing and shipping hard copies through a website(tbd). I will need input from my mentor and teachers from Kihei Charter alike. I will look at my options and use the most important flora of Hawaii, and the most appealing and dynamic drawings I can come up with. I will create personal project deadlines to keep myself on track, and I will push myself not to procrastinate so I can create a product I’m proud of. I hope to have my books shipped and in my hands by early January 2023.
I have already started drawing out my pages, and I have looked at potential costs for buying copies of my book. I know that I need to provide accurate names and specifics on my plants, and I also need to color my drawings despite the challenge of doing so. The rough estimate costs for my books have been the easiest part so far. I’ve been comparing different book printers, their prices, reviews, and final products.
For now, I plan to use money out of my pocket to pay for materials. This is subject to change in the future, however I would like to focus more on what I’m creating than fundraising. I have researched what it would look like to order several soft cover copies of my book with full color and laminated pages, and the total is around $100, give or take. This is a rough estimate, as I have not determined how many pages I will need, or what kind of paper and lamination to use.
Potential problems I have recognized are finding time and creating something that students and teachers will find important and interesting. I want to teach people something they may not have known before! I have a busy schedule with being a full time student, having a full and part time job, and having appointments. I will need to schedule time in advance to work on my writing, drawing, and meeting with my mentor. I will need to do my research both online and in person to find accurate information about the plants I will include.
Once my books have arrived and I am happy with the results, I will give them to teachers for them to review. I will have to ask them to use a part of their class time to either take my fellow students out on a field trip, or measure their learning using trivia or a match game. After this, I will send out a survey in order to see how much previous knowledge the students had, and what they’ve learned.
I’m both excited and nervous to begin this journey. I’m grateful that I can take time during my senior year to create something that challenges me, and something that I’m proud of!
